About this campground
Escape to Carnero Guard Station, where a charming two-room cabin awaits at 9,840 feet, nestled in pristine alpine meadows that stretch as far as the eye can see. This historic retreat welcomes up to 12 adventurers with modern comforts including propane-powered stove, refrigerator, heater, and warm lighting that glows against starlit mountain nights. Far from the crowds, this secluded sanctuary invites you to spot wandering elk at dawn, cast lines in hidden streams, explore endless trails, or venture off-road through untamed wilderness that few ever experience.
Carnero Guard Station offers a unique cabin lodging experience in a remote and scenic environment. The cabin is particularly well-suited for visitors looking for rustic accommodations with modern conveniences like propane-powered appliances.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time to 1908, when forest rangers first called this rustic cabin home. Originally envisioned in 1907 and initially named John Smith Ranger Station, the structure earned its current identity as Carnero Guard Station in 1916. These weathered walls have sheltered generations of wilderness guardians, their stories etched into every timber, preserving a living piece of Forest Service heritage where the spirit of the early conservation movement still echoes through the pines.
Weather and SeasonsUnder crystalline skies that dominate 80% of your stay, summer days warm to a perfect 72°F while evenings cool to a refreshing 42°F, ideal for campfire stories and stargazing. As seasons turn, the landscape transforms into a winter wonderland accessible only by snowmobile, skis, or snowshoes—a true backcountry adventure where fresh powder and absolute silence create an otherworldly experience that rewards the intrepid traveler.
ElevationPerched at a breathtaking 9,840 feet, the cabin commands sweeping views across vast alpine meadows where wildflowers dance in summer breezes and golden grasses ripple like waves. This thin-air paradise sits at the intersection of earth and sky, where the forest gives way to open vistas that make you feel on top of the world.
Natural Features and SceneryAncient volcanic rock formations stand sentinel over this mountain realm, their weathered faces telling stories millions of years old. Beaver-engineered ponds mirror the sky while crystal streams tumble through meadows bursting with wildflowers. Towering spruce and fir create cathedral-like groves where shafts of sunlight filter through, illuminating a landscape where elk bugle at dawn, deer graze in twilight meadows, and majestic moose emerge from morning mists like ghosts from another time.
Geological RegionTucked into the heart of Rio Grande National Forest's north-central reaches above the San Luis Valley, this high-country haven showcases nature's geological artistry. Volcanic sentinels guard sweeping alpine meadows while ancient forests of spruce and fir carpet the hillsides. Mountain streams cascade through beaver-crafted wetlands, creating a mosaic of ecosystems where the raw power of volcanic forces meets the gentle persistence of water and time, sculpting a landscape that captures the essence of Colorado's wild soul.
