About this campground
Perched high above the wilderness, Post Creek Guard Station stands as a testament to America's conservation legacy. This 1934 Civilian Conservation Corps masterpiece invites modern adventurers to step back in time while embracing the raw beauty of isolation. Here, where the modern world fades away, you'll find yourself in a rustic cabin that once housed forest guardians watching over vast expanses of wild country. Pack your provisions and drinking water for this off-grid experience—the reward is profound solitude and sweeping mountain vistas that few travelers ever witness.
Post Creek Guard Station offers cabin accommodations in a remote forest setting, providing a unique and private experience. Primitive camping is not available.
Historical SignificanceStep through the doorway of living history at this 1934 wildfire lookout station, where generations of forest rangers once stood vigilant against flames. Eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, this cabin whispers stories of the Civilian Conservation Corps workers who built it with their own hands during America's Great Depression. Every weathered board and hand-hewn beam connects you to the brave souls who protected these forests, offering an authentic glimpse into the early days of forest service operations when guardians lived on the edge of wilderness.
Weather and SeasonsExperience nature's full spectrum at Post Creek, where summer days can soar above 100°F in the valley below, making the cabin's elevation a welcome respite. As seasons shift, crisp autumn air gives way to winter's embrace, occasionally dusting the landscape with snow. The dramatic temperature swings and variable precipitation patterns remind visitors they're truly in the heart of Northern California's untamed backcountry, where weather writes its own rules and every season brings a different adventure.
ElevationRising above the surrounding landscape at an undisclosed mountain elevation, Post Creek Guard Station offers a lofty perch that commands respect and rewards those who make the journey.
Natural Features and SceneryFrom your cabin doorstep, witness a landscape both scarred and spectacular—where recent wildfires have created a haunting beauty across mountain slopes, opening dramatic vistas previously hidden by dense forest. The crystalline waters of Beegum Creek wind through the valley below, while the cabin's ridgeline position offers commanding views that stretch to distant peaks. This is nature in transition, where blackened snags frame sunset skies and new growth pushes through ash, creating a powerful reminder of the forest's resilience and eternal cycle of renewal.
Geological RegionDiscover your place in the dramatic topography of Shasta-Trinity National Forest, where Post Creek Guard Station crowns a windswept ridgeline above the spectacular Beegum Gorge. This rugged corner of the Hayfork region puts you at the doorstep of the enigmatic Yolla Bolly Mountains, where ancient geological forces have carved deep canyons and thrust up lonely peaks. Below, Beegum Creek has spent millennia cutting through bedrock, creating the dramatic gorge that defines this remote landscape—a testament to the patient work of water and time in California's northern wilderness.
