About this campground

Discover your perfect basecamp at Fowlers Campground, where the gentle shade of mixed conifers and ancient oaks creates a natural sanctuary on Mt. Shasta's eastern slopes. This thoughtfully designed campground offers modern comforts with paved parking spurs, fresh running water, and clean vault restrooms, all while maintaining its authentic connection to the wilderness. Just minutes away, the legendary McCloud River cascades through a series of spectacular waterfalls, drawing adventurers and nature lovers to this coveted destination where mountain majesty meets riverside serenity.
The campground provides accommodations for both tent and RV camping. Primitive camping is not explicitly mentioned.
Historical SignificanceStep into a landscape shaped by generations of loggers and dreamers in the shadow of historic McCloud, where massive timber once fueled California's growth and ambition. This former logging stronghold has transformed into a gateway for outdoor enthusiasts, yet echoes of its industrious past remain in the surrounding forests. The campground sits at the intersection of natural wonder and human heritage, where century-old logging roads now lead hikers to pristine waterfalls and the enduring spirit of California's timber legacy lives on in the towering trees overhead.
Weather and SeasonsSummer arrives at Fowlers with brilliant blue skies and warm, golden days perfect for waterfall hikes and riverside picnics. The dry season brings ideal camping conditions, with cool mountain evenings that invite campfire conversations under star-filled skies. As autumn approaches, crisp air carries the scent of changing seasons through the oak woodlands. Winter transforms the landscape into a quiet wonderland, though the campground closes to allow nature its peaceful slumber beneath potential blankets of snow.
ElevationPerched at 3,300 feet above sea level, Fowlers Campground occupies a sweet spot in the mountains where the air stays refreshingly cool without the harsh extremes of higher elevations. This moderate altitude creates an ideal microclimate throughout the camping season—warm enough for comfortable tent camping, yet cool enough to escape the valley heat. The elevation provides just enough mountain atmosphere to make every breath feel cleaner and every sunset more spectacular.
Natural Features and SceneryImmerse yourself in a living gallery where mighty conifers stand shoulder-to-shoulder with graceful oaks, creating a diverse woodland tapestry unique to this corner of Mt. Shasta. The star attraction lies just beyond the campground boundaries—the magnificent McCloud River, where crystal-clear mountain water plunges over ancient lava flows in a trio of breathtaking waterfalls. These natural masterpieces, ranging from intimate 15-foot cascades to dramatic 50-foot plunges, offer endless opportunities for photography, quiet contemplation, or simply soaking in nature's raw power and beauty.
Geological RegionFowlers Campground rests on the eastern flanks of majestic Mt. Shasta, where the southern reaches of the Cascade Mountain Range create a dramatic backdrop for your outdoor adventures. This unique geological position has crafted a landscape where volcanic history meets vibrant ecology—ancient lava flows now cushioned by rich soils support thriving oak groves interspersed with towering conifers. The result is a distinctive ecosystem that showcases the dynamic forces that have shaped Northern California's most iconic mountain region over millions of years.
