Best Time to Camp at Black Mountain Lookout

Summer is the best window for access and comfort. Daytime highs range from the mid-60s to low-80s, while nights drop into the 30s and 40s. The summit catches steady winds, sometimes strong enough to be notable. Afternoon thunderstorms roll through occasionally. Holiday weekends see moderate crowds. The site closes for winter when snow blocks the road. Spring and fall can be iffy for road conditions, though the views are worth it if you can get in.

About Black Mountain Lookout

Black Mountain Lookout sits at 6,959 feet on a summit in Plumas National Forest, about three miles outside Milford. The 1934 fire lookout cabin sleeps four, with adjacent tent sites for four more. Sweeping views stretch north to Honey Lake and south to Last Chance Creek. The site costs $60 per night and includes electricity. A rarity for this kind of remote setting. But getting here requires a high-clearance vehicle and patience for the last three miles of rough, narrow road.
Black Mountain Lookout offers a unique opportunity to stay in a historic fire lookout cabin, complemented by tent camping. "Staying here was such a great experience I’d recommend to anyone."
