Del Valle offers a diverse range of camping options, including RV sites with full hookups, tent sites, and cabins.
Historical SignificanceMore than just a camping destination, Del Valle stands as the storied eastern portal to the legendary Ohlone Wilderness Trail. This 28-mile ribbon of backcountry adventure winds through some of California's most pristine landscapes, following paths once traveled by the indigenous Ohlone people. Today's visitors walk in the footsteps of countless generations who have found sustenance, shelter, and spiritual renewal in these oak-studded hills.
Weather and SeasonsDel Valle's Mediterranean climate paints each season with its own distinct palette. Summer arrives with golden sunshine and warm days perfect for lake adventures, though savvy campers know to retreat indoors when mosquitoes claim their evening shift after 7 PM. Winter transforms the landscape with crisp air and dramatic skies, occasionally flexing nature's muscles with flooding that reminds visitors of the valley's dynamic character. Spring and fall offer the sweet spots—mild temperatures and fewer crowds make these seasons ideal for those seeking a more intimate connection with the landscape.
ElevationThe campground rests comfortably in the valley floor, where gentle topography creates an accessible outdoor playground for campers of all ages and abilities.
Natural Features and SceneryAt Del Valle's heart lies its crown jewel—a magnificent five-mile stretch of pristine lake that mirrors the sky and reflects the surrounding tapestry of golden grass and ancient oaks. These venerable trees, draped across the encompassing hillsides, provide both shade and character to the landscape while sheltering an impressive cast of wildlife. Lucky visitors might spot graceful deer at dawn, hear wild turkeys announcing the morning, or catch a glimpse of an elusive bobcat padding through the underbrush. When darkness falls, the expansive valley reveals one of its greatest treasures: a breathtaking celestial display unmarred by city lights, where the Milky Way stretches across big open spaces that make souls feel both small and infinite.
Geological RegionDel Valle's 4,316 acres unfold within a dramatic valley carved by time and water, creating a natural amphitheater framed by undulating hills cloaked in California's iconic oak woodlands. This geological masterpiece, managed by the East Bay Regional Park District, showcases the region's characteristic terrain where ancient tectonic forces sculpted valleys and ridges that now serve as a playground for hikers, equestrians, and nature enthusiasts. The interplay between water, earth, and vegetation has created diverse ecosystems that shift from lakeside wetlands to chaparral-covered slopes, offering explorers a complete cross-section of Northern California's natural heritage.
