About this campground

Discover a hidden gem where history meets wilderness at Los Burros Campground, a free rustic retreat nestled deep within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. This former Forest Service Ranger Station offers 12 generously spaced sites scattered across the landscape, providing ample privacy for those seeking solitude. While equestrian enthusiasts frequent these grounds with their horses, all adventurers are welcome to experience this unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance, where weathered barns and time-worn corrals tell stories of the forest's past.
Los Burros Campground offers primitive camping with no fees, catering to tent and dispersed camping options. It is also suitable for equestrian campers and small RVs, although there are no designated RV sites or hookups.
Historical SignificanceStep back in time at this living piece of forest service history, where an early 1900s ranger station still stands sentinel over the meadow. The weathered barn and rustic corral, both proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places, serve as tangible reminders of the dedicated rangers who once called this remote outpost home. These historic structures invite visitors to imagine the days when forest rangers on horseback departed from this very spot to patrol the vast wilderness.
Weather and SeasonsExperience the dramatic seasonal transformations of the high country, where summer days bring crisp, dry air with comfortable temperatures hovering between the mid-70s and low 80s—perfect for hiking and exploring. As winter descends, the landscape transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, with temperatures plunging below freezing and creating a pristine alpine environment. Note that vault toilets close during the snowy months from late fall through early spring, adding to the authentic backcountry experience.
ElevationPerched at a breathtaking 8,000 feet above sea level, Los Burros offers a true high-altitude camping experience. This elevated paradise provides cooler temperatures and crystal-clear mountain air, though visitors should take time to acclimate to the thin air and watch for signs of altitude sensitivity during their first day or two.
Natural Features and SceneryImagine waking to the sight of morning mist rising from a pristine meadow, framed by towering ponderosa pines and quaking aspens that dance in the mountain breeze. The campground's grassy understory creates a park-like setting where wild turkeys strut through camp, elk graze at meadow's edge during dawn and dusk, and deer materialize like ghosts among the trees. As one enchanted visitor noted, 'Lots and lots of tall pines! Beautiful area,' capturing the simple magic of this forest sanctuary.
Geological RegionSituated in the heart of the White Mountains within the vast Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, Los Burros showcases the region's signature landscape of expansive grassy meadows interspersed with dense stands of ponderosa pines and shimmering aspen groves. At elevations between 7,900 and 8,000 feet, this mountain ecosystem represents the transition zone where dense forest gives way to alpine meadows, creating diverse habitats that support an abundance of wildlife and offer endless opportunities for exploration.
